Una especie de anfibio anuro, endémico de Venezuela, hoy es uno de los pocos que quedan de su género o quizás el único que no está extinto. Se habla de que solo queda un 10% de su población y hubo una reducción de su habitad en un 80%.
Casi se extingue por completo, producto una enfermedad Quítridomicosis, causada por el hongo Chytridium o BD (Batrachochytium dendrobatidis). Este hongo no solo afecto a Venezuela, ha acabado con poblaciones completas de anfibios a nivel mundial.
Actualmente no se tiene la cura para este hongo, es sumamente resistente y puede durar vivo durante mucho tiempo sin un hospedador. El cambio climático y el tráfico de fauna también ha generado la propagación del hongo, la vulnerabilidad de los Atelopus y de los anfibios en general.
En Venezuela, el Atelopus cruciger fue declarado Especie en peligro de extinción bajo el decreto N-1.486 el (11/09/96). Se encuentra protegido por la ley y restringido a pequeñas poblaciones.

Conservation status: Critical hazard.
A specie of amphibian endemic to Venezuela, today it is one of the few remaining of its genus, or perhaps, the only one that is not extinct. It is said that there is only 10% of its population left and that there was an 80% reduction in its habitat.
It is almost completely extinguished due to a disease, Chytridomycosis, caused by the fungus Chytridium or BD (Batrachochytium dendrobatidis). This fungus not only affected Venezuela, it has ended complete populations of amphibians worldwide.
There is currently no cure for this fungus, it is extremely resistant, and can last long alive without a host. Climate change and wildlife trafficking have also generated the spread of the fungus, the vulnerability of Atelopus, and amphibians in general.
In Venezuela the Atelopus cruciger was declared an endangered specie under Decree N-1,486 by 11/09/96. It is protected by law and restricted to small populations.
